Parade previews and flyovers are on!

Parade rehearsals will take place April 29th and on May 4th, ahead of the main event on May 9th. The rehearsals will be held from 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM, with heavy machinery making its way towards the Red Square down Tverskaya Street and up Novy Arbat Street.  Expect road closures and traffic around the time of the rehearsals.

Image from http://www.RG.ru – Rossiyskaya Gazeta.  The parade route map: the long diagonal street is Tversakaya, the green triangle in the bottom right corner is the Kremlin, and the next straightaway after the Kremlin embankment is the Novy Arbat Street. Then it turns right onto the Sadovoye Koltso, or Garden Ring Road. The blue streets will be closed to traffic.

On May 7th at 10:00 AM, Moscow’s skies will be filled with 143 military jets and helicopters with a Tupolev-160 supersonic strategic bomber at the helm of the squadron. The parade is expected to be particularly impressive this year.

You need tickets to attend the Red Square section of the parade. The best place to spot the planes is from a rooftop around Tverskaya.

Check out my earlier post on why Russia parades its tanks and missiles with such aplomb.
