Moscow has an astonishingly low level of petty crime. However, you should exercise caution around railway stations (“vokzal”) and use big-city rules. Inside the Garden Ring Road it is quite well-policed. There is also a strong culture of public order. The outskirts are generally quiet, but avoid being far outside the city, especially at night. I would also advise against non-official taxis; use a reputable taxi company.
